Hand Surgery

Dr. Merrick provides services to patients related to hand surgery or reconstructive surgery of the hand. Dr. Merrick has completed a Hand Surgery Fellowship at the renowned Kleinert & Kutz Hand Institute. During this intensive one-year Fellowship, Dr. Merrick performed thousands of procedures ranging from limb reattachments to simple nerve and arthritis procedures.

BOOK APPOINTMENT
Arthritis

Arthritis is the swelling and tenderness of one or more of your joints. The main symptoms of arthritis are joint pain and stiffness, which typically worsen with age. The most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Dr. Merrick remains at the cutting edge of arthritis treatment offering stem cell injections known to reduce arthritis pain and restore function.

BOOK APPOINTMENT
Carpal Tunnel

Carpal Tunnel is a condition caused by pressure to the median nerve within the wrist or carpal tunnel causing pain, tingling and numbness.

BOOK APPOINTMENT
Cubital Tunnel

Cubital Tunnel is a condition in the elbow caused by scar tissue over the ulnar nerve. This is typically caused by repeated elbow injuries and causes elbow pain, numbness and tingling down into the fingers along with loss of strength in the fingers.

BOOK APPOINTMENT
Stem Cell Injections for Arthritis

The injection of Adipose Derived Stem Cells (usually harvested from the fat around the belly button) has emerged as a promising treatment for many musculoskeletal problems. While still in the initial stages of development, research in animal models and humans alike have yielded promising results. Of particular interest are results seen in reduction in the pain caused by osteoarthritis of both small (wrist and finger) and large joints (hips, shoulder, and knees). Several pathways of chondrogenesis, or the rebuilding of cartilage, have been elucidated in animal models. Human studies, while lacking in statistical power, length of study and study design, have shown significant reduction in pain and increase in function.

Together with our orthopedic surgery colleagues, we have developed a process of harvesting and purification of stem cells utilizing the most advanced lipofiltration system (AdiPrep). Unlike many other providers, our team consists of skilled nurses to perform phlebotomy, board-certified orthopedic and hand surgeons, as well as a board-certified plastic surgeon for the safest, most reliable fat harvesting. In addition, our team includes a board-certified perfusionist and former director of the state of Wisconsin’s blood bank. Together we provide the highest level of specialization in hopes of achieving the best outcomes.

The process involves harvesting peri-umbilical fat using a minor liposuction technique, performed by Dr. Merrick, a board-certified plastic surgeon. The fat is then ultra-purified using a cutting edge lipofiltration system performed by our perfusionist, Mr. Scott Brown. Our skilled nursing team will then obtain a small sample of blood which will be further purified, and the platelet component is mixed with the stem cells. Finally, either Dr. Austin Crow, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, or Dr. Merrick, a fellowship trained hand surgeon, will inject the joints the patient desires treatment for.

Currently, insurance coverage for these procedures is not available. Costs vary widely, depending on the location of the providers. Some parts of our country are seeing costs more than 8000 per treatment while in foreign countries costs may be as little as 2000 per treatment. We strongly encourage patients to seek care domestically as the tight tolerances of our boards drive quality of care in this country to the highest levels. To give patients access to affordable treatments, we have worked to keep our costs well below the national averages.

BOOK APPOINTMENT
Ganglion Cyst

Ganglion Cyst is a tumor or swelling on top of a joint or tendon. This type of cyst is not harmful and accounts for about half of all soft tissue tumors in the hand.

BOOK APPOINTMENT
Nerve Repair/Reconstruction

Hand nerve repair surgery is a complex and delicate surgical procedure that aims to reconnect any lacerated nerves in the hand. The nerves in our hands originate in our spinal cord in the neck, travel over the shoulders and into our fingers. There are three main nerves that allow us to sense touch, feel pain and notice hot and cold temperatures, as well as stimulate muscles to move our fingers.

BOOK APPOINTMENT
Functional Muscle Transfer

In this procedure, an expendable muscle in the upper or lower extremity is transferred preserving its nerve and blood supply to restore a specific desired function.

BOOK APPOINTMENT
Trigger Finger

Trigger Finger results from our flexor tendons getting trapped in the tight tendon sheath. When diagnosed early, simple injections may avoid the need for surgery. Early symptoms include pain in the palm or finger and/or clicking or snapping of the finger. Surgical release is a simple office procedure that releases the tendon and restores function and eliminates pain.

BOOK APPOINTMENT
Free Flap

Free Flap, also known as “Free Tissue Transfer” is a term for a procedure in which tissue and its blood supply (artery and vein) are surgically removed from one part of the body and transferred to another area of the body for the purpose of reconstruction.

BOOK APPOINTMENT
Replants: Fingers/Extremities

Replantation is the surgical reattachment of a finger or hand that has been completely cut from a person’s body. The goal of this surgery is to give the patient back as much use of the injured area as possible. This procedure is recommended if the replanted part is expected to function without pain.

Microvascular Reconstruction

Microvascular surgery is used to reattach severed fingers, hands, arms, and other amputated parts to the body. This is done by reconnecting the small blood vessels, thus restoring circulation before the injured tissue begins to die. Microvascular surgery is also used in reconstructive surgery.

Tendon Transfer

Tendon Transfer is a surgical procedure that transfers a healthy/working tendon to another damaged part of the body to regain mobility.

Congenital Deformity

Congenital deformity is a hand or finger deformity that is present at birth. Any type of deformity in a newborn can become a challenge for the child as he or she grows. Hand deformities can be particularly disabling as the child learns to interact with the environment through the use of his or her hands. The degree of deformity can range from simple redundant digits to severe absence of fingers or bones.
