Tips for recognizing and treating frostbite – As seen on WEAU
Last week, the wind chill contributed to dangerous subzero temperatures nearing as low as 55 degrees below zero, creating an increased risk for frostbite. Dr. Merrick shared tips for recognizing and treating frostbite on Tuesday, January 29th.
He says the first signs of frostbite are redness and pain and cautions to not use an artificial heat source to rewarm the affected areas. As frostbite causes sensory loss, you won’t be able to tell how hot the temperature is of what you’re using to rewarm with. Instead, he suggests soaking any affected area in room temperature water to help recover.
